R.I.P TROY DAVIS....

Dear Family Members,
Today I come to you with a heavy heart as family member Troy Davis was put to death for allegedly killing an off duty policeman.  He maintained his innocence throughout his residence on Death Row, at best the witnesses in this case were shaky. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15013860  As there was more than reasonable doubt in this case; today has been a tragic day for the American judicial system.
My favourite book of all time is the autobiography of Ms Angela Davis.  Wow just writing this is getting to me.  Ms Davis’s story is something I draw upon whenever I feel lost, need direction or a lesson in womanhood.  She is more than just an Image with an Iconic Afro to me because she represents a time when we were willing to sacrifice all that we had, and all that we were, in order to move us collectively towards equality.  Many were called upon to pay a high price for freedom think George Jackson, and of course Huey Newton, Malcolm X and many others.

Their families continue to feel the impact of these sacrifices that we have long forgotten. Ms Davis and her comrades symbolised discipline, organisation and action. This is why I love her so much as she gives me pride in black womanhood.  We are right now living in terrible times; in some ways it is worse now that it was then, as people today are desensitised and have short term memories when it comes to injustice and human rights. it feels like we are all waliking around in a comatosed state, me included.

In Angela’s day every- body at least acknowledged there was a problem whether they chose to act or not.  The debt that we owe Angela’s generation is one we could never repay but nor have we even tried.   We refuse to address these deaths with apropriate measures.
