Whats Wrong With Black Pride?

Dear Family Member's

Today I had a discussion with a gorgeous, well read, but clearly ignorant brother who accused me of being a member of the Black Panther Party because I subscribe to belief systems' that empower my community.  Although dude said it as an derogatory term, I enjoyed the comparison.
 (might rock a Fro tomorrow)

There is nothing like the power of our men
The Dispute
We disagreed regarding the black families subscription to Santa Claus....Now, I have said it before and I will say it again, I refuse to tell a child that is born into my community, that a European male is going to sneak down their chimney and give them any-thing positive.  If families choose to exchange gifts as practising Christians or out of principle/habit why not just say this? This brother asked me 'what's the harm' is in such practices.  I believe that we have plenty of other useful things we can be teaching black children, like how to survive in an Institutionally racist environment, (Trayvon Martin, Stephen Lawrence, Mark Duggan) they're own history so they understand they are not Slaves and fables from their own culture in my case Anansi Spider.

I am proud to be black and I make no apologies about this pride. However, I see us partaking in rituals en- masse that have nothing to do with us, like we do not have our own cultural practices.  How do we expect our young ones to be leaders that are prepared for the harsh realities of this world; when WE the adults persistently fill their heads with foolishness?

  1. I think if more of us adults were 'awake' and educated regarding 'OUR' culture then maybe we would have a lot less children who self-hate. I totally agree that we should encourage and teach our children their history, it is 'our' duty. If we don't know it like many of us don't (myself included) then we take the time to learn it and be proud of the paths we now walk so freely!!! Yes, that is down to the fight of our ANCESTORS... Give Thankh.... I say lets breaks many of these chains which still keep us 'enslaved' mentally, physically and spirtually! Keep spreading the message sis <3 Dionne-Dee xx
