Casual Sex in the City (The Dating Series)

Casual sex is the single person’s prerogative. It’s ‘one’ among many aspects of single life that make couples want to revisit those carefree days; the possibility of  having sex whenever with whomever holds a lot of appeal for many people single or not.

After  talking with my research panel (a small group of friends aged between 25-35 a mixture of singletons and couples that I bribed with a bottle or three) regarding this matter both men and women agreed that as they matured they wanted good quality sex rather than lots of sex with different partners. Most referred to intimacy, comfort and love as key components to having really good quality sex. 

After pondering the group’s musings I have to disagree; I suspect that people say what they are expected to say in a group of mixed company where every-one is sober. Especially if they are respected within the group professionally and have only had platonic associations; It can be so difficult to keep it real!  But if all people are looking for is intimacy, comfort and love why are we having adulterous affairs? Inappropriate sexual relationships?

Casual sex must be hot, hot, hoooooooooot or people would not risk it all for a piece of ass. (Tiger Woods any-body) Almost all the members of the group admitted to getting it on casually and to being repeat offenders.  The women in the group admitted to having lots of casual sex but with men that were known to them for example Friends, colleagues and ex partner’s.  High numbers of the men and just two of the women were vocal about having sex with complete strangers.

Casual sex like anything else must have its place. It seems obvious to me that two consenting adults that are not in a relationship can enjoy sex just as much as a couples that are more familiar with each other maybe more as they do not have to worry about what comes next???  Too many times I have come into contact with individuals that just exude sexual energy and we all know that chemistry is a powerful and dangerous part of attraction that is hard to resist.  The group were shocked that in theory, I found the idea of sex with a stranger preferable to sex with an ex-partner as almost all agreed that this set up was ideal of all casual situations especially in the short term. 

Understanding your needs as an individual will dictate whether you can successfully navigate the minefield that is casual sex. Most people that continually court risky sexual behaviour have unresolved problems. It’s rare that we can go through life not wanting to experience something much deeper?
